MALAWI STOCK EXCHANGE HOSTS WEBINAR ON RAISING CAPITAL THROUGH ISSUANCE OF SUSTAINABLE BOND

The Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE) held a webinar on 10th December 2025 under the theme “Raising Capital through Issuance of Sustainable Bond,” bringing together key voices to shape the future of sustainable finance in Malawi.

The session opened with warm remarks from Mrs. Kelline Kondowe, Chief Operating Officer of the
MSE. She reminded participants that sustainable finance is not just a global movement, but a local
necessity for Malawi’s growth.

Mrs. Kondowe then shared insights on the “Guidelines for Issuance of Sustainable Bonds”, showing how these instruments could unlock funding for projects that protect the environment and uplift communities. Her presentation highlighted the MSE’s vision of positioning the market as a driver of inclusive development.

The spotlight then shifted to Old Mutual Investment Group, where Ms. Brenda Mwale, Head of Operations and Ms. Tafika Nyirenda, CFA, Portfolio Manager, spoke passionately about “Sustainable Investments: Background of student housing in Malawi”.

They used the example of student housing to illustrate the urgent challenges facing Malawi’s tertiary education sector such as overcrowded hostels, poor infrastructure and unsafe accommodation. Their narrative showed how sustainable investment models could provide practical solutions, turning a social challenge into an opportunity for impactful investment.

The webinar became interactive during the Q&A session, with participants asking questions
about bond issuance, investment opportunities and the feasibility of student housing projects.
The discussion reflected a shared commitment to blending financial innovation with social progress.

Closing the event, Mrs. Kondowe returned with heartfelt remarks, thanking the presenters and
participants. She emphasized that building sustainable finance in Malawi is a collective journey
and that platforms like this webinar are vital for sparking ideas and strengthening partnerships.
